The Malaysia Institute holds regular seminars and webinars (normally once a month), and an Update conference every two years, bringing together some of the world's leading scholars on Malaysian politics and society. The Institute enhances the work of the ANU's Asia-Pacific focus by hosting events and lectures from distinguished Malaysians visiting Canberra. Previous keynote speeches have been delivered by Anwar Ibrahim, Muhyiddin Yassin, Lim Kit Siang and Saifuddin Abdullah in the political sphere, as well as numerous visiting scholars from Malaysia and around the world.

It devotes its attention to the politics and societies of Southeast Asian countries, and their connections with one another.
