ANU Malaysia Institute welcomes students, academics and the public in Canberra to the screening of award-winning director Nik Amir Mustapha’s latest film Imaginur.

Imaginur is a critically acclaimed film that surprised the Malaysian cinema this year, widely regarded as one of the best Malaysian films. Known for his boundary-defying style, stunning cinematography and deep exploration of the complexity of human mind, Nik Amir Mustapha’s debut feature KIL (2013) won Best Film at the 26th Malaysian Film Festival when he was only 27 years old. Imaginur is his third feature film.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Malaysia Day, dinner will be catered after the screening for registered participants. Please select appropriate tickets to indicate if you will be joining us for the movie only, or also joining us for the dinner afterwards.

 

MOVIE SYNOPSIS

As a young man's life spirals out of control, he tries to regain focus by seeking out an offbeat hypnosis treatment. Things take a turn when the girl from his dreams starts to appear in real life.

 

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Nik Amir Mustapha is a director, producer, scriptwriter, and founder of Lumatic Films in Kuala Lumpur, producing feature films, TV shows and commercials. Since completing his film studies at Metro Screen in Sydney, Australia, Nik embarked on his filmmaking career in 2010. His debut feature, KIL, was about a suicidal young man who hires an anonymous company to assassinate him, only to unsuccessfully cancel the contract when he meets a girl. In 2013, the film premiered at the Osaka Asian Film Festival and won best film for Malaysia’s top film award. His second film, NOVA, about a group of friends on a road trip to make a film about UFOs that they sighted in high school years ago, premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2014. Imaginur is his third feature which he produced, directed and co-wrote.
