Call for papers: ANU Malaysia Institute postgraduate and early career research symposium

Old woman selling at the market in Malaysia

The Australian National University is one of the world’s leading academic institutions for the study of Malaysia. The ANU Malaysia Institute was established in 2016. It seeks to foster an interest in Malaysia in Australia, and to act as a key coordination point for Malaysia-related activities across ANU and Australia.

On 20 March, the ANU Malaysia Institute (MI) will be holding its biennial Malaysia Update Conference. The theme of the 2023 Update is 'Reformasi 25 years on: a critical reflection'. The following day, March 21, the MI is organising a half-day postgraduate and ECR symposium.

The MI is able to fund a handful of Australian university-based postgraduate and early-career researchers who work (in-part or in-whole) on Malaysia to attend the Update on 20 March, and present their work at the symposium on 21 March. Applications from any discipline or field of study may be submitted, but applicants should note that the audience will largely be scholars from the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. Papers which speak to the conference theme will be welcome, although we don't expect you to create original/new work for this symposium. Feel free to present your PhD research and tie broadly to the theme. Successful applicants will be given funding to cover domestic flights to/from Canberra, and three nights accommodation in Canberra 19-21 March.

To apply for this funding, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • you are a PhD student or postdoctoral/early career researcher currently based at an Australian university.
  • your research is, in-part or in-whole, on a Malaysia-related topic.

To apply, please fill out the Google Doc form, including submitting a 250 word paper abstract.

Submissions close on Monday 20 February 2023. Successful applicants will be notified within a week.

FAQ

Q: I do not meet the criteria but would like to attend the ANU Malaysia Update and symposium as an audience member. Is that OK?
A: Certainly, we would love to see you there. Both days will be open to the public.

Q: I am writing my PhD on Malaysia but am not based at an Australian university, can I apply for funding?
A: Sorry, our funds are limited and we are prioritising scholars based at Australian universities.

Q: I am writing my PhD on Malaysia but am not based at an Australian university, can I apply to present at the symposium but I will fund myself?
A: Unfortunately we don't have the capacity to run a larger symposium/call for papers and are prioritising Australian-based university students and scholars, but you are very welcome to attend and participate in the discussions.

Q: I am writing my PhD on Malaysia at an Australian university, but am currently based in another country. Can I apply for the funding?
A: Yes, although our funding will only cover domestic flights, so if successful you'd need to get yourself to Australia.
